Sender One in the Archaic Modern Light collection is a luminaire constructed from a methodically-honed salt crystal pierced by a stoic brass rod, sitting gracefully in situ. A distinctly diffused LED light emanates from its fulcrum.

Archaic Modern Light is a collection of luminaries inspired by materials, archetypes and technologies from the remote past; produced in an amalgam of ceramic, salt and brass. At the heart of this collection is the concept that there is no linear advancement from a primitive level of civilization to a more developed one in history. Meaning, we cannot assume that the past was more or less advanced, in “technological terms” than the present or future. We observe this in the mysteries surrounding ancient cities and the monumental architectural and civic achievements of their time.
I chose to use as one of the materials, Himalayan salt crystal for its inherent light diffusing qualities and its connection to the past. In this case, the crystallization of an ancient sea salt deposit formed and preserved under enormous pressure millions of years ago. This crystal is thought to preserve the energy from the sun of that time period. The idea that the material itself could harness the power of light inspired the design of Sender One.
Today, crystals are essential to the functioning of our modern technologies, because of the way they’re balanced, ordered structure emits consistent frequencies and allows them to store a tremendous amount of information and so stable it can survive for billions of years. It is conceivable that knowledge and use of these capabilities existed among ancient cultures. Perhaps there is an ongoing trend to imagine the possible futures by connecting ourselves to the past.
