“Sobre la mesa” (On the table) emerges as an invitation. Eating is a basic and everyday activity, this collection was built with a prehispanic style, the intention was to design objects that bring you closer to the ritual. Thus, the Neanderthal aesthetic shape comes as a unique and organic feature. Wood carving and turning were the processes used in the making of the pieces, this gives the objects its character, a sense of “still in process” kind of way, rough but subtle at the same time. The collection was designed for two people to be more intimate and personal.

The design and making of each piece is a very detailed process, mainly the set of knives, that is inspired on the caveman hunting tools or carved bones. The cutlery set is hand carved by the Artisan Gerónimo Pech, in the Community of Dzitya, Yucatan. Gerónimo says this are very complex pieces to produce, however he’s always very satisfied with the outcome because it turns into sculptural pieces of highly aesthetic irregular shapes.

The singularity of this collection is in the crudeness of the material, we try to use bicolor “Katalox” wood, we find very important that the pieces are produced in a simple natural way, starting from the extraction of the material, the production made by native artisans and also the final finish of the pieces using natural oils (vegetable oils, carnauba wax, linseed oil and beeswax). This collection portrays the organic and original shape of the materials, we don’t aim to transform the materials but to use it as it is.

I think we are in need to find our origin, each day is harder to find a link to our past. The media, technology and everything revolves around an individualistic evolution, clarifying that these trends are necessary for the constructive pursuit of our growth. We are at a crucial stage that defines new consumption scenarios and global trends, it is important to communicate the honesty and provenance of the materials to a conscious market. Our brand is not interested in the industrial exploitation and commercialization of its products, but to bring experiences of our indigenous native culture and processes.

If this current reaction is to find a claim to our past and the roots of our culture, Áurea is, and will be, an existing response to a society that is in search for an origin.
