Creating Biotextiles from Textile Waste
Short Course

Short Online Course by Studio Sarmite (founded by Sarmite Polakova) in collaboration with Through Objects. This 4-session course will shift the perspective of sustainability to one of the most polluting industries – textiles. We will look at the various processes within the textile industry that cause waste, learn about different waste streams, environmental issues, and dependencies, and question what new forms of sustainability can emerge. In parallel, you will create multiple biotextile concepts and develop experimental processes using various textile wastes local to your environment and natural binders. Together, we will explore material lifecycles and consider generational designing to keep the non-regenerative materials in use. Throughout the course, you will broaden your knowledge of sustainability around non-compostable materials and how biopolymers can help to see textile waste as a resource for developing a sustainable alternative.

DETAILS: 1 Month | Intro session (1:30h) + 4 sessions (2:30h) | All sessions will be recorded and sent to participants | 320€ (VAT incl. / Exemption for educational events) | 10% discount for students.

Course Program

Intro & First Sessions

Introduction (Rita Trindade and Sarmite Polakova) & Biotextiles Essentials I| Industry & Fibers: In our first session, we will dive into the world of the textile industry, the different kinds of waste, streams, problems, and effects. We will use our environment as a field study for textile types, analyze these and start thinking of textile concepts for the coming weeks. We will look at fiber types and ask critical questions about sustainability within natural and technical lifecycles
Date: June 22 and June 29 at 18:00 CEST

Second Session

Biotextiles Essentials II | Structure & Colors: In our second session, we will dive deeper into structural material types of biotextiles, and develop a methodology plan to explore multiple biotextile designing directions. In addition, we will look into dye waste and how playing with color recycling can lead to surprising results. This session will be technical with experimental homework exercises for the coming week. Date: July 6 at 18:00 CEST

Third Session

Biotextiles | Layers & Material lifecycles: The third session will focus on extending the designing methodology, analyzing the properties of each ingredient (textile + binder+colour), and elaborating upon these findings. We will start creating a material lifecycle map considering end-of-use and generational designing concepts. Date: July 13 at 18:00 CEST

Fourth Session

Research and project presentation | Feedback and further development discussions: In our fourth and last session, students will share their projects as well as the acquired knowledge, methodologies and insights within the creative community Date: July 20 at 18:00 CEST
