Burnt Cork Collection Exhibition at Made in Situ Gallery

From calcined bark to fine grain, the Burnt Cork collection by Made in Situ plays with dichotomies, influenced by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance’s experiences through the dramatic fires of summer 2017 in Portugal. The Burnt Cork Collection is a series of seven objects made with discarded burnt cork, transformed into custom gradient blocks, and carved to reveal tactile & sculptural creations.

“It was an opportunity to transform the remnants of the fires, creating our own material as a rebirth. Working with artisans to imagine relevant adaptations of realities. The reality of fire, the reality of how to use cork blocks, the reality of manual manufacturing and technology.”
Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance

The tables are a play on positioning, architecturally juxtaposing the vertical and horizontal, calling for visual interaction with the rough blocks that structurally hold the soft fluidity of the upper-most surface. DETAIL
BURNT CORK CHAIR

Perched on three legs, the stool morphs gradually from visible burnt cork into an organic top. The smallest piece of the collection is probably the one that best crystallizes the essence of the collection.
