About Body of Water III

Julie Pasila’s photographic practice explores the landscape through tactile, analogue image-making methods. She is interested in the materiality of analogue processes and how they can be used to document – and make physical –elements that are shapeshifting, intangible, or quick to disappear.
“I work extensively with lumen printing, a cameraless technique that exposes traditional light-sensitive photographic papers to daylight. I use this process to create field studies, working outdoors to record natural elements, such as water, snow, plants, sand and detritus, directly onto photographic paper.

To create imagery for Body of Water, photographic papers have been exposed directly to the shoreline of Lake Ontario. Impressions left on the paper reveal the shape, texture and movement of water and sand. The forms in these prints are enhanced through sculptural mounting methods, which allows the work to retain the physicality and dimension of the landscape.” Julie Pasila
